John The Baptist
This is the first in the altarpiece series. The photo linen canvas is remeniset of some altarpieces in the cathedrals of Europe, while the uncoated B&W polaroids on the sides act visually as flat icons as their images shift into flat graphics from the effects of being exposed to the atmosphere. The tone of these small images is remenicent of gold leaf, and the fact that they are direct images from the original camera makes them act as evidence in the same way that medieval pilgrims would have responded to icons. The original installation contained an earn sealed by wax, and an extensive text describing the issues of belief related to the piece.
The picture story of John the baptist is represented in the slides around the outside. Key to the message of this work is that one cannot pass through the story if images to seek real evidence. The picture story presents itself as evidence, the basis for belief. It does not allow for the sublimation of that belief into knowledge.
