The railroad spike tears neatly through the canvas and plywood, all
suspended in space, visible from both sides. One can examine it
closely, empathise with the tearing fibers. Yet this is not a crucifix. It
is not evidence of the event it portrays. The photographs document
an unscathed pair of feet. It is the icon itself that has been
hammered, nailed through the heart. Yet perhaps we are still
persuaded. To what end?
